CALIFORNIA TRIP

YAY!! Disneyland again... I think I have to be one of the most spoiled people on the planet. We spent two and a half days at the park. The highlight was the new Toy Story ride. The boys absolutely loved it. We rode on it three times and waited an average of 45 minutes for each ride. Another highlight of the trip was watching the Pixar parade. All the characters from the Disney/Pixar films went by us and gave us a decent dousing with various squirt guns. It was a pretty fun parade, especially since it was at least 90 degrees out. The water felt nice. The second night we stayed in the park until 11:00 p.m. Everyone had taken a three hour nap earlier in the afternoon and we weren't very tired. So after watching Fantasmic and the fireworks from the waterfront, we headed over to Fantasyland and rode on three or four more rides before the kids were ready to go. It's been really fun being able to fulfill my hearts desire of heading to Disneyland whenever the fancy strikes me this year. I think James might be done after this trip though. I think I might be too, but don't quote me on that...

OH MOM, NOT DISNEYLAND AGAIN!! -- Seth and Jacob are just being silly in this picture and are only pretending to be bored, but I thought it was hilarious!

GILROY

We headed up to Gilroy for the remainder of the week and spent time hanging out with family. We took the boys to the Monterey Bay Aquarium, which they thought was pretty awesome. Seth had a run in with a crab (he hates the way crabs look, and gets grossed out by them when we see them in the grocery store) that put a slight damper on his enjoyment. We finished our tour of the aquarium in the jellyfish exhibit and I think the coolness of the jellyfish outweighed the grossness of the crabs so he had a good time in the end. The boys also loved playing with all of Grandma Jean's building toys and the rice bin. It was good to relax and be with people we don't see very often. I think it was a good break for James before he started his new job the day after we got home.

JACOB'S GOLDEN PYRAMIDS -- Made with Grandma Jean's fun building blocks

JAMES' JOB

I think James is really enjoying his new job. It's been an interesting transition for our family since the company is a start up and doesn't offer a lot of benefits. Hopefully, we'll have all the insurance kinks worked out before the end of this month though. He works 5 minutes away from the house by car and 15 by bike. He has always wanted to work somewhere close enough to be able to bike to work. He and his boss just spent a whole day planning out exactly what James needs to do and I think he is looking forward to getting started. There's a lot of weight on his shoulders since he is the only programmer, but if he does a great job (and I know he will) the pay off should be pretty nice.

SETH'S BIRTHDAY

We officially have a five year old in the house! There is something huge about turning five, I'm not sure if it's that he gets to go to school in the fall, or that he had his first friend party, or if it's just the level of maturity that goes along with being five, but this one was a biggie! We celebrated with two separate parties, one for family and one for friends. We held the family party on Pioneer Day and Seth got his own private birthday fireworks show. The crowning moment of the fireworks was what has come to be known as the Sawhorse Spectacular. We rigged one of my dad's old sawhorses with 3 spinning fireworks, one huge fountain and a firework that hangs from a stick and burns up a ribbon until it explodes. It was pretty impressive. James and my brother-in-law Aaron have already started to make plans for next years Sawhorse Spectacular! Anyway, back to the birthday... Seth had an Optimus Prime cake and got lots of presents. The frosting on the cake had A LOT of food coloring in it and all the kids had blue or red mouths by the time they were done eating.

We had Seth's friend party on his actual birthday. His friend David from the ward came, Danny his friend from preschool was there too, plus all of his cousins except Amelia. It was some rambunctious fun. We played pin the Autobot symbol on Optimus Prime, bashed an Optimus Prime pinata and ate Transformers cupcakes. Seth really loved being the center of attention.

RANDOM FAMILY NEWS

Seth is getting ready to start Kindergarten in three weeks. He's pretty excited about it, but I'm not sure he realizes that I'm not going to be there with him. He's pretty much never away from me, I even teach his Primary class at church, so I think it's going to be quite an adjustment for both of us actually. He is learning how to read right now and knows all of the letter sounds. He has a hard time putting the sounds all in the right order to make a word, but I think with practice he'll catch on pretty quick.

Jacob is our little song bird. If he hears a song once or twice he can sing it and usually sings on key too. He makes up his own words if he doesn't know what the right ones are, which adds a level of hilarity to it. Unfortunately, he is not a performer and I have yet to catch him on video. I'll have to be more vigilant about keeping the camera handy. He has been giving his vocal chords a workout lately by screeching and screaming at the top of his lungs when he doesn't get his own way. I'm not sure my ears can handle much more of that level of sound. It's amazing how sweet and cute his voice can be in one moment and then the next he's a screaming banshee. Luckily, the cute times out number the banshee times!

I am starting to feel a little more pregnant (24 weeks today), although I still don't look very pregnant. Most people I tell now are still surprised. I'm not sure whether to be flattered or offended. I mean, if they don't think I'm pregnant, they must think I've eaten about 100 candy bars too many! I do think I'm going to have to retire the non-maternity skirt I wore to church today though, it was quite tight. I've been having fun shopping for cute girly outfits at the D.I. and all the clearance sales. Jenni also gave me some super cute crochet patterns that kept me busy during the long car rides on our trip. My only wish is that girl clothes came in a few other colors besides pink and lavender. I dislike lavender and that leaves me with pink. I've been hunting for other colors, and have come up with a few cute red outfits and some greens, blues and browns. I guess until the day she demands to be dressed only in pink, I'd like to have a little more variety.

This must be a record for me... 2 postings in 2 weeks!! Amazing!

NEW JOB

James was offered and accepted a new job last week. His last day at his current job is tomorrow and I don't think he's very sad to be leaving. It's been a rough job for him, mostly because there was absolutely no trust in the company. So on to something new!! He will be working for a start up company called Commerce Interface. I'm not super sure about what it is they do, but James will be completely in charge of all the programming and computer setups. He's pretty happy to have a project that's all his own. We have high hopes for the company. The office is only 5 minutes away from our house by car and 10 by bike. That was a big selling point for James. I'll keep you posted as to how things are going for him as he gets settled in. He starts in a week and a half.

VACATION

Since we have a week off between now and when the new job starts we decided to take a trip. I'm only slightly embarrassed to say that it will include a few days at Disneyland (Again! That makes 4 times this year. Ah, the beauty of annual passes!). I'm not sure how I talked James into it. We are going to Anaheim for 2 and a half days and then up to Gilroy to visit with all the family there. Except for the driving, it should be a pretty laid back trip. We are looking forward to it.

Kaysville parade water fight

SINGING, SINGING ALL THE DAY

We went to see the movie WALL*E a little while ago. It has some great music in it from the musical "Hello Dolly". I pulled out my CD of Hello Dolly and we have been listening to it for a few days now. Jacob has pretty much memorized the opening lines of "Put on Your Sunday Clothes" which he has dubbed the WALL*E song. It's so funny to hear his little voice singing "Out dere! Dere's a wowld outside of Yonkews" I need to get a video of him! In the spirit of things I decided to get the DVD of the musical from the library. We watched it last night and again this morning. The boys have interpreted several of the songs into their own lingo. The latest is the song "It Takes a Woman". The real words go "It takes a woman, a dainty woman". The boys have changed "dainty" into "eighteen". They sang "It takes a woman, a eighteen woman" over and over and over today. It was hilarious. The other song that we are really enjoying right now comes from a Disney CD we got from the library. It's called Disney Block Party or something like that. It has a rendition of "The Tiki Room" on it that is totally awesome. We crank it up and the boys sit in the back of the car dancing in their seats and flapping their arms like bird wings. The song has a really thumping bass line and I've gotten a few strange looks from people when my mini-van is thumping this beat that could be from any hard-core rap song. I think they would be quite surprised to find out that it's the song from the Tiki Room at Disneyland.

Here's a picture of the boys in their new bunk bed.

BABY UPDATE

I officially passed the halfway mark for this pregnancy on Sunday. It's hard to believe, because it's gone soooo fast!! I'm sure the last half won't feel quite so quick though. I am just barely showing, mostly I look chubbier than normal. Everything seems to be going just fine. James was able to feel her kick the other night and Seth can't wait to feel it too. Last night, Jacob was on my lap and she started kicking right into his back. I mentioned it to James and he told Seth and then it was like an instantaneous dog-pile of hands on my stomach. Of course the baby stopped kicking right when I told them so they were all disappointed. I'm sure they'll get a chance to feel her soon though, she's starting to get much stronger. The doctor told me today that the official due date is November 22nd. That's two whole days earlier than I was told before. Woo Hoo! (Note a little sarcasm here.) I've never gone into labor on my own and was induced with Jacob the day after his due date, so I don't think I'm one of those women that always has her babies a week or two early (like my sister, although I'll pass on the 6 weeks early that she managed with her last one).

People have been giving me a lot of grief about not keeping this site as up-to-date as it should be, so I'm going to try a little harder to get it done more often.

MARCH

March came in like a lion and left like a lion this year. It was quite cold and stormy most of the month, but I am glad that spring was just around the corner. Easter was a small affair for our family this year. We dyed easter eggs and had a small egg hunt with the Abbotts. The boys had so much fun coloring eggs this year that we could have easily done 5 or 6 dozen, unfortunately no one really wants to eat that many hard boiled eggs, so we did our 2 dozen and called it good. We had one exciting day when Jared called me, when Debbie was out of town, telling me that he had wrecked on his bike and was bleeding quite badly. I pulled Jacob out of his crib and herded Seth into the car as quickly as I could and we headed over. I told Seth what had happened and he decided that our car was an Ambulance and that we had to go super fast to save Jared from whatever awful fate awaited him. I had two sets of little siren voices going nearly the whole trip over there. It was hilarious! We got there and Jared had scraped his knee up really well, most of the bleeding had stopped thanks to a neighbor's kind care. We bandaged Jared up and took him home with us. I'll never forget that ride though!

APRIL

April was a fun, but busy month. Seth had his first swimming lessons and started T-ball. The boys also got to fly their own kites for the first time. Seth was very nervous when we got to his very first swimming lesson. He wouldn't go sit with his class and wanted to stay with me instead. It took about 10 minutes to convince him that everything was going to be okay and then, once he decided it would be all right, there was no stopping him. He ended up having a great time and was really, really sad when his last lesson was over. We signed him up to play T-ball this spring with his best friend from Primary, David. Watching a bunch of 4 and 5 year olds play T-ball is supremely entertaining. They field their own balls, run the wrong way, and pretty much don't pay attention to the game. After several games they are definitely getting better, but it is great to watch! Jacob even got into the action during one of the games, he found a spare glove and took off for the field. Luckily, James was in the outfield helping Seth and Jakes just went over to where they were standing and put himself in the game. I think he even got the ball once or twice. He would have gladly gone to bat as well if we had let him.

MAY

The great Henderson family Southern California trip took place the 10th through the 17th of this month. What a trip it was!! We went non-stop for all eight days. Two and a half days spent driving, a half day at the beach, one day in the San Diego Zoo, one day in Sea World and three days at Disneyland. It was insane, but we had a lot of fun.

THE BEACH

Our hotel in San Diego was only about 10 minutes from the beach, but the weather was not ideal for being at the beach. It was only about 63 degrees and windy. That didn't stop Amy, Christian, Hannah and Maggie from donning their swimsuits and plunging in. They were freezing, but having a blast. The rest of us spent our time digging in the sand and flying kites. Jacob got a little bit too close to the water as he was trying to get some in his shovel and a wave came up and drenched him. Poor boy! I didn't have any other clothes for him so he was quite cold by the time we made it back to the hotel, needless to say we put both boys straight into a warm bathtub.

THE ZOO

It was still quite chilly the next day as we headed out to the San Diego Zoo, but the weather turned out to be pretty good for as much walking as we did. The zoo is expansive and we only covered about two thirds of it. The best part of the whole day was when we got to ride the sky ride from the top of the zoo down to the bottom. Both the boys keep asking me when we are going on a sky ride again. The kids also really loved the Children's Zoo, they pretended to be wild animals in an empty exhibit and spent a lot of time in the petting zoo. I think my favorite part of the zoo was watching the polar bear swim, it was quite a show.

SEA WORLD

We started out at Sea World with a bad taste in our mouths after not being allowed to take snacks in for the kids and having the gate attendant throw a royal fit about Seth's name not being on his ticket. We used the tickets the previous day at the Zoo and they didn't say anything about having our names on them, but the Sea World lady was about to hunt James down when he didn't write Seth's name on the ticket the second he walked through the gate. Anyway, after that initial brouhaha, we had a pretty good day. The Sea lion show was super cheesy. The Shamu show was awesome blossom (as Seth put it!), and I'm very glad we didn't sit in the "Soak Zone". We would have been drenched. I liked the Dolphin show best of all the shows, they are very fun to watch. But, I have saved the very best part of Sea World for last! Just as we were leaving the park we decided to check out Shamu's underwater viewing area. We walked down and Shamu was there checking out all the people who were checking out her, she looked like she was about to come over to where we were standing, but she made a quick turn upward instead and then just let loose, green poop rained down toward us. Thank goodness for the glass barrier! Seth was totally fascinated and not at all grossed out, which is strange because just about every human bodily function makes him puke. If you ask him what his favorite part of Sea World was he'll tell you right away, "It was when Shamu POOPED!!!!" Ah, the memories!

DISNEYLAND

This was trip number three to Disneyland this year for us, so we focused mostly on helping everyone else have a good time. I'm not sure we succeeded, because it was extremely hot all three days we were there and we were all worn out from the beginning of the trip. We spent mornings in the park, afternoons at the hotel and in the pool, and then evenings at the park again. It was nice to have the big breaks everyday. I know I stressed myself out worrying about whether everyone else got to do all the things they wanted to, which was kind of dumb, but it's over now. I think everyone had a good time for the most part. Next time we do a big trip like this we definitely need a down day halfway through the week. All in all it was fun to be with almost all of my immediate family for a nice long vacation.

BRYCE CANYON 60 FOR 60

This year my Dad turns 60 so what would be more natural than wanting to run 60 miles in one day? Well, that's just what he did. My siblings and I are all in agreement that our parents are a little crazy about how much they like to run, but this idea is beyond insane for us. My dad had the run all planned out. He started at 4:00 a.m. in Panguitch at the site of the old hospital where he was born, then ran a good 20+ miles into Bryce Canyon, where my sister and I served a continental type breakfast for all the runners and the family. At the breakfast, Dad changed into his trail running clothes and headed out for 20+ miles of trail running all through Bryce Canyon. The weather was quite pleasant, but it must have been a grueling run, going up and down the canyon walls. Anyone who has hiked in Bryce knows that the trails are all quite steep as you head up and down from the rim. There was a small problem with the mapping my Dad had done and it turned out that one of the stretches he ran was a good two or three miles longer than he had originally thought. Unfortunately, it was also the longest time he was going to run without a water stop. He suffered some mild dehydration, but as soon as he had some fluids and a snack he felt much better and was able to finish the last part of the run. He finished about 9:00 p.m. at his old family Homestead in Tropic. My mom ran the first leg and the last leg of the run with him and I think it was the farthest she's ever run in one day too. We were able to meet them just as they were coming into Tropic and took some pictures of them at the finish line. We had a nice dinner with all the participants and got back to our campsite at about 11:00. I still think my parents are quite insane about running and even more insane since they dreamed this up and actually completed it, but I know it was a huge accomplishment for both of them and I'm am very proud of them.

FUNNY STORY

I have a funny story about Seth that I have to write down before I forget it. He and I were renting National Treasure 2 from one of the Redbox machines. We got back in the car and started off and then Seth says to me, "Mom, I have a scripture for you." I said, "Okay what is it?" He says, very seriously, as if quoting a scripture reference, "The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints 152:23... AND IT CAME TO PASS THAT A MOVIE CAME OUT. And the movie was called National Treasure." I laughed SOOOO hard. He ended up being mad at me for laughing at him, but it was so funny.

HAPPY FAMILY

Our family has been so blessed over the last few months that I don't even know how to put all my feelings into words. Seth and Jacob are the best boys in the whole world, they have great senses of humor and are awesome travelers (Which I am very grateful for since we've driven over 2000 miles in the last month). They get along with each other pretty well. Seth is happy that Jacob can finally understand and participate in some of the games that he makes up. And Jacob is happy to follow Seth around and be interested in whatever Seth is doing. (This is sometimes an annoyance to Seth, but Jacob loves it!) James and I have just been trying to keep up with the boys and all the changes and traveling that have happened in the last little while. We are so grateful to be parents and to have our extended families close by to support us.

She was just over 4 pounds and around 18 inches long. It was several days before they decided to name her Katrina. She stayed in the hospital for almost three weeks until she was breathing well and could regulate her body temperature. It was a big Christmas surprise to have her here, but we are glad she wasn't worse off because she was so early.

NEW YEARS EVE

We had a relatively quiet New Years Eve. We played games and snacked on finger food. The kids ran around like maniacs the whole entire time and were worn out by the time we actually celebrated the New Year at about 9:00pm. We headed home right after to get ready for our trip the next day.

DISNEYLAND WITH THE LANCES

We left for Disneyland on New Years Day. We drove out with Jeremy and Jared. John and Courtenay met us there on the 2nd in the morning. Jenni and Justin flew in that afternoon. We had a great time. Seth got to ride on a lot of the bigger rides now that he is over 40 inches. He had fun showing his Puncles around the park and taking them on the rides that he loves. His favorite ride this time was Soaring Over California. Jacob also had a great time except for when he only wanted to be held. He's getting pretty big now and it takes some serious muscle to carry him around that much. His favorite ride was riding Dumbo with John and Courtenay.

JANUARY

After Disneyland we finally got back into a normal pattern again. The Holidays were fun, but I wasn't too sad when they were over and life sort of slowed down. We celebrated Jacob's 2nd birthday on the 17th. He had a Mickey Mouse Clubhouse birthday. We had lots of people over for pizza and cake. The present pile was taller than Jacob and I don't think he quite knew what to do with them all. He'd open one and want to play with it right then, but we had to move him on to the next one or we would have never gotten them all open. His favorite presents were the balls and all the trucks. I was finding trucks and pieces of trucks everywhere for the next few days.

FEBRUARY

February started out very slow for us and then snowballed into a bit of a frenzy. It all culminated with James changing jobs and us going on another impromptu trip to Disneyland. We have annual passes this year and it was the most inexpensive, fun trip we could think of to take in the short time he had off. This trip was really nice because it was the first trip we had taken with just our little family. We took everything really slow and only rode on the rides that the kids wanted to ride on. It was fun to just spend time focusing on the kids. Seth has declared that this time his favorite ride was Star Tours. Jacob loved the Tea Cups this time and was more willing to walk or be in the stroller which was a lot nicer for James and me.

STORAGE ROOM REMODEL

We also started remodeling our storage room. We tore down two walls and will build up two more. The storage room will be bigger by about 40 sq ft. The new part will have a bunch of removable and adjustable shelves so that we can get everything off the floor and organized a little better. This latest project also leads us nicely into remodeling the great room downstairs too, but I'm not sure when or if that project will ever happen.

SETH'S UPDATE

Seth has been making huge strides in his writing and has started figuring out the sounds of letters. He delights in telling people that he is four years old and will soon be five. I think he is really going to enjoy school this fall. I'm not sure if I'm ready for him to be in school, but I guess I'll just have get over it. He has also developed a love of Bionicle toys from playing with them with his puncle, Jared. Seth definitely has that growing up attitude where he doesn't want to play with toddler toys anymore. He also really wants to get bunk beds in his room and have a Transformers quilt on his bed.

JACOB'S UPDATE

Jacob decided recently that talking is the way to go and has just been talking up a storm ever since. He talks in full sentences now and is getting easier to understand. He loves to run and play with Seth. He also really loves playing with the train set we have. He will make hugely long trains and tug them around the track. Jacob has been testing out what exactly it means to be two years old. He throws temper tantrums and hits people. He also growls in frustration when he doesn't get his way. His personality is definitely showing through, because he can also be the sweetest and most helpful two year old.

"preschool" this month. My sister Marrisse, her sister-in-law Emily and I all have kids that are going to Kindergarten next fall and we decided to have a preschool for our kids. We meet once a week and talk about a different letter of the alphabet. The kids learn to write the upper and lower cases of the letter and we read stories and have activities related to the letter. Seth really likes it and looks forward to it every week. We were also invaded by most of the extended Lance family for John and Courtenay's wedding. We had a bunch of dinners and get-togethers. It was fun to see everyone and especially fun for Seth and Jacob to get to spend time with Grandpa Lane.

JOHN AND COURTENAY'S WEDDING

I spent a few days before the wedding making the wedding cake with my sister Amy. We experimented with a couple of different cheesecake recipes and finally came up with a good one. The cake turned out great and we got it up to Logan with no hiccups. It was raining and cold as we made our way to the Temple. The ceremony was lovely and it was great to have nearly the whole family in the temple together. We had a nice luncheon at a ward building and then broke into various groups to relax before the reception. The reception was held in a large house near the Logan temple. It was beautifully decorated and everything turned out great. John and Courtenay were deliriously happy.

HOUSE PROJECTS

We are still plugging away on getting the house fixed up. After sitting on the project for the whole summer, we finally finished the awning over the back porch. We painted and put new corrugated plastic on top. We also cleaned and recoated the hardwood in our living room. It's not as perfect as if we had sanded and completely refinished it, but it doesn't have ugly dark spots and is nice and shiny now. We also had carpet installed in the hallway and the bedrooms at the back of the house. It made a huge difference in how the house looks and sounds. The floor squeaks are much more quiet now. In all this upheaval we moved Jacob into Seth's room and made Jacob's room a play room. It has been so nice to have a place for all the toys and for the boys to play. I hope they will also become better friends because they are sharing a room.

HALLOWEEN

This year Seth was a policeman for Halloween and Jacob was a pirate. I also made an awesome costume for James. He was Sir Robin from Monty Python's Holy Grail, his costume was complete with empty halves of coconuts to bang together. We had four Halloween get-togethers. The first was at my Tante Jo's house. We had dinner, played games and made crafts. The second was a pumpkin carving party at my mom's house. Seth did a train pumpkin again this year and James carved a cute face for Jake's pumpkin. The third party was in Kaysville, we had all sorts of games and treats. There were 15 kids there so it was quite insane. The last party was at James' mom's house on Halloween night. We had a mini chili cook off and the kids got to go Trunk-or-Treating at Grandma's ward house. We also trick-or-treated at James' work that afternoon. I weighed the kids candy after we got home and they had just under nine pounds of it. It was quite an impressive haul. All in all it was a fun Halloween.

SETH'S UPDATE

Seth has been very curious about how things are spelled and what letters make what sounds. He has also really enjoyed the little preschool we have been doing. He is very good at figuring out solutions to problems that he encounters. He is also very interested in what's going on in his world so at least once a day we have to go over what is happening in the next little while. He always wants to know what's going to happen next, where are we going to go, who are we going to see, what are we going to do and things such as that. He is getting to be really helpful around the house. A few days ago he washed the sink for me and he knows how to vacuum the floor. He helps me a lot and is a good big brother for Jacob too.

JACOB'S UPDATE

Jacob is a rambunctious little man. He loves getting into things and making messes. He is learning all sorts of new words all the time and is starting to make short sentences. He still loves to sing and is learning new songs or making up his own all the time too. He learned how to do a thumbs up yesterday and does a very funny pose as he tries to stick his thumb up. We call him Jakie-me-too because he copies everything we say or do. Jacob also decided that books are very cool and his new favorite is "Brown Bear, Brown Bear". He is so fun to watch and to play with.

There was something there for all the kids to do. Jacob and Caleb had so much fun in the play houses. They would go inside, look out the window at Marrisse and I and then say "Hi Mommy". Then they'd run out of the house and look in the window from the outside. I think they were trying to catch each other in the window, but as soon as one ran out the other had to go too and they never quite got synced up. They did this for about 10 minutes before they got tired of it, which is a pretty long time for a one year old attention span.

SARIS FAMILY REUNION

The third weekend in August was the Saris Family Reunion. We rented Condos up in Park City and stayed for three nights. It was nice to see my cousins that I don't see very often. We spent a lot of time in the swimming pools at the resort and in the hot tubs that were right in our condos. The pools were really nice, they had one for just adults, one for everyone and one very small one that was just perfect for Jacob and Caleb. It rained pretty hard most of the day on Saturday and so we had to spend most of the day in the condo. During a break in the storm we tried to go up and ride the Alpine slide, but it clouded over again right as we were pulling into the parking lot and it began to pour as soon as we got up to get our tickets. So we headed back and put the kids in the hot tub since the pools were closed. Later on that evening we were finally able to ride the slide. Seth rode with me and I let him "drive". We cruised down the hill partway and then realized that the person behind us was coming up fast. I took over the driving and we flew down the rest of the hill. Seth loved the ride and said it was "Crazy!". The weekend was really nice and relaxing. Seth didn't want to leave because he had so much fun being with his cousins for three days straight.

BATHROOM PROJECTS

During August and September we decided to finally remodel both of our upstairs bathrooms. The projects went fairly smoothly aside from some plumbing snags. Of course those were due to our bad plumbing luck... Every time we attempt a plumbing project, we end up going to the store at least one or two more times to get parts that we've either forgotten or that we didn't know we needed. Unlike every other project in this house so far there were very few hidden speed bumps that got in our way and we now have two modern and nice looking bathrooms. They are still extremely small, but by changing out large vanities for smaller ones we created more space in both rooms. They both look so nice.

Over Memorial Day weekend we decided to take a trip out to Gilroy, CA to see James' grandparents. We spent most of the weekend up at Mt. Madonna with most of the extended family who were camping there. It was freezing most of the time and the entire mountain was covered in fog. Seth had a blast playing with his cousins, especially Josh. We also spent an afternoon with James' Uncle Darin and his family. Our last day there we headed to Monterey. We drove around DLI where John went to language school and then went down to Lover's Point and played in the ocean and the sandy beach. The brakes on our van were making a horrible noise and so grandpa called his mechanic and set up an appointment for us to have them fixed. We had to high-tail it out of Monterey in order to make it to the appointment on time. It was a great trip despite the brake trouble. We enjoyed seeing everyone and showing off our two cute boys.

DAY OUT WITH THOMAS

The long awaited Day Out With Thomas the Tank Engine finally rolled around again and Seth was excited. He makes us tell him the "story" of how he rode on Thomas last year quite often so the experience is still fresh in his mind. This year we got tickets for just Seth and James to ride the train because I didn't really care about going for the short ride and the tickets were 19.00 each. So the boys hopped on the train and I waved goodbye from the side of the track. A man saw me there and offered to buy me a ticket. I really didn't care about riding so I kept saying no to him. Then one of the employees came up to me and said I could ride for free, so I got on the train with the boys. We had a good ride and Seth had a great time. He even went into the little petting zoo that they had there and usually he's too afraid of the animals to go in that kind of thing. We bought him a souvenir pocket watch which he proudly wore on his conductor pants.

AMELIA CALL

On April 25th, Jenni and Justin welcomed Amelia Jean Call to their family. It was good timing since James' mom flew in to Salt Lake that morning. She got to go over to the hospital and witness the birth of her first granddaughter. Amelia is a beautiful baby. She was a little colicky for the first few months and gave Jenni many sleepless nights and new-mom stress. Luckily, she is settling into a pattern now and seems to be much happier. Jacob is fascinated by her and thinks that every baby he sees is Baby Amelia. Seth is very gentle with her and likes it when she smiles at him.

LANCE INVASION

James' family packed up their house and, with John's help, began the long journey from Virginia to Utah. John and Debbie were both driving big trucks and Jana was driving the Suburban. They made it nearly all the way here, but driving that huge truck was taking it's toll on Debbie. James and his Uncle Matt and cousins Lance and Logan went to rescue them. They met them just as they had crossed over into Wyoming. The whole group pulled an all-nighter and drove all the way into Utah. We spent the next few days helping unpack the trucks. Their new house is nearly put together now. There a just a few more finishing touches to be done and they will be fully moved in. It's been fun to have them so close and Seth has had a blast playing with Jared and Jeremy.

JOHN AND COURTNEY

John was set up on a blind date by our Aunt Laura. He reluctantly made the drive up to Ogden to meet the mystery girl. Lucky for him, he didn't cancel the date like he contemplated doing... He is now engaged to Courtney Mitchell. They only dated for about 2 weeks before they started talking about marriage and were engaged quite soon after that. They have set their wedding date for the 29th of September and will be sealed in the Logan Temple. Courtney is a great girl and she fits in with the Lance family quite well.

JACOB'S UPDATE

Jacob has made some major progress since we wrote last. On his 17th month birthday he finally decided to start walking. He is getting very good and doesn't like to take it slow at all. He sort of fall-runs. He'll let go of something and then walks as fast as he can in a certain direction until he falls down. I am so glad that he has finally decided to start walking!! He is getting too heavy to carry around all the time. He has also made some great leaps in his vocabulary. He can say, Ma Ma, Da Da, John, More, Banana, Milk, Ball, Yay, plus a few more that I can't think of right now. He also knows most of his animal sounds and he knows that trains say Wooo, Wooo. He is really adventurous and has no fear. He loves swimming and will get wet whenever he can. He also loves music and singing.

SETH'S UPDATE

Seth has been learning how to be a boy from his Punkles, Jeremy and Jared. He is obsessed with burping and says that Jared is his hero because Jared can burp on demand. He has been testing limits a lot lately and we have had to deal with some major temper tantrums and some back talk. He is getting a little better now and he really is a good boy most of the time. He still loves to dress up and pretend he's a firefighter or construction worker or a conductor or any number of things. He is getting more mature all the time and is starting to be a good help to me around the house. He will put his toys away when I ask him to and is usually very willing to help with any projects we have going on.

That's it for this installment. We love you all!

NEW MINI-VAN

We bought a new mini-van this month. We had tax returns and some other extra money coming and we both felt like it was right time for us to buy a larger car for our family. We looked at three cars initially, the Toyota Sienna, Honda Odyssey, and the Dodge Grand Caravan. The Odyssey was our favorite of the three, but they are quite pricey, so we decided to look a little more closely at the Dodge Caravan. We went to a dealership that had a great deal on a 2006 Grand Caravan and they showed us a 2006 Chrysler Town and Country that they had just gotten in. It had power doors and a power lift-gate, heated leather seats, and automatic Tri-area climate control and it was only 1800 more than the Grand Caravan we were looking at. Since it had everything I wanted in a mini-van and the leather seats that James really liked we decided to buy it. Its been nice to have all the extra storage that a mini-van offers and the extra seats so that John doesnt have to squeeze in between the two car seats when he wants to come somewhere with us. I think it will be a really good car for us.

DISNEYLAND TRIP

On Friday the 16th James and I were writing each other on the computer and he mentioned that he didnt want to be at work and I said I didnt want to be at home and so we thought wed go on a road trip to test out our new van. James mentioned Disneyland in the list of places that we could go and of course I latched on to that idea. We hemmed and hawed around whether to actually go or not and we called John who was in Texas with Jeffery to see if he wanted to go with us. I think the clincher for making the decision to go was that I found a hotel right across the street from Disneyland that someone had cancelled their reservation for so the rate for the room was about half the normal price. That and John finally decided to come with us too. So we packed up the car, bought a new plane ticket for John, booked the hotel room and finally set off at 9:00 pm. Less than 24 hours after James and I had the initial conversation about where to go, we were walking into Disneyland. It was crazy and fun to just make a snap decision like that. Seth was really excited when we told him where we were going. We picked John up from the Santa Ana Airport that night and we spent the rest of the weekend enjoying Disneyland together. John bought Seth a Peter Pan hat and himself a Captain Hook hat and there were many great battles fought between the two of them. Jacob loved the carousels and the play area in Toon Town where he could crawl around a little. The whole trip was a whirlwind and tiring but we had a lot of fun and it was a nice break for all of us.

SETHS UPDATE

Seth has been working on not wetting his bed this last month. Its been a little frustrating, because I dont think he even feels it when he pees at night. Weve found that if we can get him to drink more during the day instead of tanking up right before bed he tends to stay dry. We have a long way to go before he will really be night trained though. Its been fun to watch him get better at problem solving and using logic. One of his new favorite phrases is That doesnt make any sense. When we told him that we were thinking about going on a road trip, he automatically said that we should go to Disneyland. When James asked him if we should go somewhere else like Zion National Park, Seth said, That doesnt make any sense Dad, Disneyland makes sense. I wish I had had a tape recorder for the whole conversation because it was really hilarious. Seth also likes to dress up. He has about 6 or 7 different hats that he wears to be different characters.

JACOBS UPDATE

Jacob learned how to stand without holding on to anything. One day he just pushed away from the couch and stood there for a few seconds. He also took his first step by accident. He is still not very interested in walking, but learning how to balance is a good step in the right direction. He also has at least one of his back molars in and is working on the others. We found out that he has some springtime allergies when we were in Disneyland. When we walked out the first morning his eyes got all red and teary and his nose started running like mad. Luckily, we found out that the Emporium at Disneyland sells medication and we dosed him up with some Benadryl as quickly as we could. He spent most of that first day asleep because of the medicine. We also found out that he is not as good of a traveler as Seth was at this age. Jacob doesnt like to sleep in the car and would rather be crawling around than stuck in a car seat. He did pretty well, but we had to stop and let him out a few times. Thats something we never had to do with Seth. Another big milestone for Jacob is that he learned how to nod his head to say Yes. Its been nice to get some sort of communication from him about what he does or doesnt want.

FUNNY STORY ABOUT JACOB

We were getting ready to go to Hannah's baptism and I put Seth in the bathtub. Jacob had taken a bath the day before so he didn't really need one and I had him all dressed up in his Sunday clothes to go to the baptism. Jakes likes to be in the bathroom whenever anyone is in there and I let him play around in there while Seth took his bath. They were having a good time so I ran downstairs to get something. Pretty soon I heard Seth yelling at the top of his lungs that Jacob is in the Bathtub. At first I thought he was just saying that Jacob was in the bathroom, but then he kept yelling and laughing about it. I ran back upstairs to find that Jacob had pitched himself into the bathtub, fully clothed and was having a great time splashing and playing with Seth. He was as happy as a clam! I was laughing at him and scolding him at the same time. It was really cute, but it made us a little late for the baptism. Needless to say, I've kept a close eye on him in the bathroom since then.

JAMES AND MIEKKA

James has been working hard lately. His company is going through some rocky times and we dont know exactly what will be happening with this job in the next year. Several people that James works with are already jumping ship in the wake of some rumors that they might be closing the Utah office. We are praying to know when or if we should start looking for something different. So far we feel like we should hang on and see what happens. We are enjoying the warmer weather and James has been paint-balling and I have been working a little in the flower beds and taking the boys for bike rides and other outside excursions.

Love James, Miekka, Seth and Jacob

1-21-07

Happy New Year everyone. We are way overdue for an installment on the website, so here it is (finally).

Thanksgiving

We spent most of Thanksgiving Day in the car. We drove up to Logan to see James' Grandma and Grandpa Baerwaldt and enjoyed hors d'oeuvres and desserts. Then we drove to Draper to have Thanksgiving dinner with my family. After stuffing ourselves with stuffing and turkey and yummy deserts, we got back in the car and drove home so we could roll ourselves into bed.

Sinterklaas

On December 5th we celebrated Sinterklaas with my mom's extended family. Seth, Jacob and their cousins gorged on candy and got more presents than they knew what to do with. On the 6th we woke to find our shoes filled again with even more presents. Seth got the airport that goes with his Geotrax train set. Jacob got an airplane that also goes with the set so that he could play too. James and John both got yo-yos. It was a fun day. There were so many yo-yo's flying around. Seth and Jacob even got into the action as you will see from the photos.

Henderson Christmas

Since our family was leaving to spend the holidays with James' Mom and Dad in Virginia, my family decided to have a gift exchange a little early this year. We had a nice dinner and then we all got to open presents from Grandma and Grandpa Henderson. Seth was in present heaven from the amount of gift opening he got to do this December. Every time I told him we were going to see someone he would ask if there were going to be presents there. The grandkids also put on a Nativity for us. Seth did triple duty, he played Joseph, a shepherd and a wiseman. I guess that's what happens when you are the only boy in the family old enough to be in the play. He had his hands in his pockets the while he played Joseph and the shepherd and was very serious about the whole thing. It was so funny because I'd never seen him put his hands in his pockets and leave them there before. All the kids were very cute though and did a great job.

Christmas in Virginia

We flew out to Virginia on the 16th and had two and a half weeks of rest and relaxation.

DC Trip with Seth

We took Seth to DC and enjoyed unseasonably warm temperatures, as we walked around the city without jackets on. We ate at Ben's Chili Bowl, which has been a dream of James' since seeing the place highlighted on a food tv show. Then we went to the National Botanical Gardens to see the model train displays. It wasn't as impressive as the last time we had seen it, but the model builder had been smart enough to have one of the trains pulling Thomas the Tank Engine on one of the flat bed cars and that made it all worth it for Seth. We also saw the Rembrandt display that the National Gallery had going on and we went to the Air and Space Museum.

Clay Oven Food

We throughly enjoyed making pizza, bread and other things in John's clay oven. The pizza's were awesome and it was definitely an experience to cook them in the oven. I'm not sure I'd be willing to put in all the effort that it takes to get the oven ready to go, but I liked the fact that it is possible to bake things outdoors if you put forth the effort.

Seth's Shows

While we were in Virginia Seth broke out of his shell and did several performances for the family. He would go around and give everyone a ticket and then he would go to the front of the room and say "Ladies and Gentlemen!! A New Show!!!" He would the proceed to pull a pretend rabbit out of his hat or make Lion disappear or something of that nature. When his show was done he would take a bow, which with his awkward 3 year old body was pretty cute all on it's own.

Hike for Breakfast

James and Seth went with the family on a hike for breakfast. They packed everything they needed to make a dutch oven breakfast in a bunch of backpacks and took off. The island they hiked to is the site of an old quarry and there was a big stone partially cut away from the bedrock which Seth dubbed his pirate ship. The cooked an awesome breakfast of biscuits and breakfast hash. Seth also enjoyed being Grandma Debbie's baby bird as she dropped orange sections into his open mouth. They all came home muddy and tired.

Christmas

It was so fun to have the Lance clan together as a family (all except Elder Lance that is). Seth slept upstairs with John and Jared on Christmas Eve. I hear they got up very, very early and Christmas morning waiting in agony for Grandpa Lane to wake up so they could get to the presents. This was Jacob's first Christmas and it was fun to watch him try to figure out what exactly was going on. He had a good time unwrapping his gifts and then playing with the wrapping paper after whatever cumbersome thing inside of it was out of his way. He was dressed in a red and white striped Christmas outfit and looked like a chubby candy cane. Grandma Debbie had gotten everyone a sticky slap hand to play with as one of the family gifts. Unfortunately, something about the slap hands triggered Seth's gag reflex and we had to make everyone put them away to stop him from throwing up. Later, Jana was showing Grandpa how the hands worked and Seth happened to walk in the room. His reaction was immediate and we ended up with barf all over the floor. It was hilarious and sad at the same time. For the rest of the trip we had to make sure there were no slap hands visible in any room that Seth went into. Christmas day was very relaxed and we spent most of the day playing, watching movies and enjoying the company of family.

National Marine Museum

We went with Grandpa and the boys to the National Marine Museum. It's a brand new museum and really impressive. We ended up going to it twice because James, John and Grandpa all only got through about a quarter of the museum the first time we went. There was a lot to see and do.

Temple / Arlington Trip

The day after Christmas the whole family took a trip to the DC temple. We left Seth and Jacob with Jeff and Jared while all the recommend holders in the family went to an endowment session. I think it was a dream come true for Mom and Dad to have almost all their children in the Temple with them. I know it will be a thrill for me when my kids are old enough. After the temple we headed to Arlington National Cemetery. It started pouring rain as we pulled into the parking lot. We quick-marched our way up to the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in order to catch the tail end of the changing of the guard. We were drenched as we walked back down, only to have the rain stop as we reached the visitor center. Justin took the blame for the rain, saying that it has rained every time he has ever been to the cemetery. I would like to go back one day when it isn't raining and wander around a bit more.

New Years Eve

We decided to have a small party for Jacob's Birthday on New Years Eve so that Grandma and Grandpa could watch him get cake all over his face. The cake wasn't quite as gooey as we would have liked, but he managed to get pretty messy even so. The highlight of the evening was ringing the big New Years bell. Seth thought it was the coolest thing and was very sad when we had to put it away because it was so loud. For the rest of the trip he kept asking me if he could have the big bell in order to ring it and be a train conductor.

We had such a great time being with family. Seth was really sad to have to leave his punkles, especially his "best friend, Jared". Jacob loved snuggling with Jana and playing with grandma. James had a great time with all the members of his family, but I think he was most excited to get to spend time with his dad. And I have never had so many ready and willing babysitters and was spoiled to be able to leave the boys whenever I needed to. It was also especially fun for me to get to know James' mom and dad better and to feel more a part of their family.

Jacob's Birthday

Can he really be a year old already? It has absolutely flown by. We had cake for him on his actual birthday, but his party isn't going to be for another two weeks so that John can be there when he gets back from Germany. We love having Jacob in our family. He is growing so fast and learning new things all the time. While we were in Virginia he finally learned how to clap. It was funny because he learned how to say the word clap before he learned how to do the actual clapping motion. He also learned how to say "hello" and loves to pretend he's talking on the phone. In the last month he has gotten four new teeth and now has four on the bottom and four on the top. He can stand for a few seconds on his own. Much to Seth's chagrin he loves to follow his big brother around and play with whatever Seth is playing with. He has gotten very chatty and will babble on and on. He says, ma ma, da da, done, clap, hello, bye-bye, and loves to sing yo-ho yo-ho a pirate's life for me and twinkle twinkle little star (both mostly babbling to the melodies). He is also very protective of things in his possession and if you take something away from him, he will definitely let you know that he is unhappy about it.

Seth's Update

I took Seth to the doctor this week and he weighed 32 pounds. He had gained 2 pounds in a month and it must be mostly in height because he hasn't chubbed up at all. He is still a train man through and through, I bought him an engineer's hat and he calls it his "ductor" (conductor) hat. He also keeps telling me all the new geotrax train things he wants for his birthday. His other love is playing pirates, he will go around the house wearing a belt with his sword tucked in one side and his pirate pistol stuck in the other. He said something really funny the other day when he was playing pirates... He pointed his pirate hook at me and said "Give me your woot!" I went along with him and gave him some pretend loot. He said, "Thank you. Now I can say, 'Ha, Ha'" Then he proceeded to say "Ha-Ha" in his best piratey voice. It was so funny. James and I nearly fell out of our chairs because we were laughing so hard. I think it's probably not so funny in the retelling, but if you've ever heard him talk like a pirate it's easier to imagine the hilarity of him saying "Now I can say Ha-Ha" before actually saying Ha-Ha. He's now a Sunbeam in Primary and has made the adjustment fairly well, but he still has a problem with hitting other kids and we are trying our best to help him learn to control himself. We love his vibrant personality and relish the times when he sneaks up and gives us kisses and tells us that he loves us. He is a wonderful son.

Well, I think this letter is quite long enough. James and I are doing well and having so much fun being parents. We hope all of you had wonderful holidays too and wish you the best for the new year.

Love James, Miekka, Seth and Jacob

SEPTEMBER

September was a quiet month for us. We spent Labor Day with my family hiking and climbing big rocks up at the Brighton ski resort. We also took the kids up to Snowbird to the Oktober Fest they have there. James was excited to see that they had Dale Myberg the 1996 Yo-yo World Champ there doing a show and offering free lessons. James ended up spending most of the time that we were up there trying to learn how to loop-de-loop his yo-yo a little better. Seth and I went up and tried out the bounce houses that were there. After looking around a bit we went and had some German fare for dinner. Jacob tasted a pickle for the first time and loved it!

DISNEYLAND

Mid-October found Seth and I saying goodbye to James and Jacob and hopping in the car to head to Disneyland again. We went with my parents and my sister, Amy. We spent 3 days at the parks. Seth really enjoyed the Buzz Lightyear ride and he was also tall enough to go on the small roller coaster in Toon Town and the bumper cars which were both fun for him. He also really enjoyed Pirates of the Caribbean and decided that he needed a pirate sword for his souvenir. My mom and I went to the Dollar store and found two pirate sets for less than Disneyland was selling one cheap pirate sword, so we got them for him and he and Amy played pirates. Seth also learned that the pirate word for Bathroom is the "Head" and so for the next few weeks he had to go splash his pee-pee in the Head. We had a great time. I think I've gotten my Disneyland fix taken care of for the next year or so.

HALLOWEEN

Halloween was so fun this year. Seth was Woody the cowboy from Toy Story and Jacob was a horse. The Saturday before Halloween was the annual pumpkin carving party and my Aunt Jo's house. Seth and I carved a Thomas Train pumpkin. Marrisse's kids had the day before Halloween off school so we had a Halloween party that night at my parent's house. We dressed up, played Ghost's in the Graveyard, "bobbed" for doughnuts, and played Halloween bingo. On Halloween day we went to James' work and Trick-or-treated from desk to desk. We also went to my mom's house and trick-or-treated a few houses in her neighborhood before heading to Jenni's for dinner and more trick-or-treating. Seth ended up with a huge bucket full of candy.

JOHN'S BACK AGAIN

We are happy to have John living with us again. He finished his job in Iraq and after spending a few weeks in Virginia made his way to Utah. He is living in the basement and has decided to move from the small cave-like bedroom into the unfinished bedroom at the south end of the basement. He has been busy getting organized. He bought a used truck, updated his bike, and has laser surgery done on his eyes. He is studying for the GRE so that he'll be able to start grad school sometime soon.

SETH'S UPDATE

Seth has been learning his letters and numbers. He taught himself how to write the letter H and is working on E and S. He can also read his name and the word Cars. He surprises me all the time with little points of brilliance and insight. He has been diagnosed with Asthma after having trouble breathing during two chest colds. We give him breathing treatments with a nebulizer once a day. The doctor says that there is a chance that he could grow out of it, but he's got relatives on both sides with it so I guess we'll wait and see. Seth's biggest accomplishment this month is finally being potty trained. He has some bad days still, but he is doing a great job and we are so proud of him.

JACOB'S UPDATE

Jacob has been cruising. He finally began to crawl and he loves to pull himself upright. I weaned him when I went to Disneyland in October, but he really enjoys drinking from a bottle and was on his way to self-weaning anyway. His first word was ba-ba which he says when he's hungry. He learned how to wave hello and to "throw it in the oven". He loves to explore everything and to follow me around. He reached the 20 pound mark so we had to move him out of his infant car seat and into a convertible seat. His first top tooth came in and I expect his second will be here any day. He loves to laugh and is ticklish all over his body, so it's pretty easy to make him giggle uncontrollably.

JAMES AND MIEKKA

James has been really getting into his yo-yos again. He's been perfecting some of his tricks and has been thinking about getting some new yo-yos. He's really been enjoying having John here to talk to and play with. They spend a lot of time "saving the world" in their Battle for Middle Earth game.

I have been busy being a mom. I made Seth's and his cousin Sophie's Halloween costumes. I cook and clean and shop. I love playing with my all my boys and am having a great time!

Love James, Miekka, Seth and Jacob

I'm trying a new format for this newsletter in the hopes to make things more concise and to not leave anything out. So here goes...

FATHER AND SONS OUTING

On the 22nd of July James and Seth went up into the mountains for a Stake Father and Sons outing. Our ward was in charge of a lot of dutch oven cooking. James decided to try his hand at Elaine Hicken's peach cobbler. Seth spent the evening using the dutch oven tools to move rocks around. They came home smelling like camp fire and Seth was dirty from the top of his head to the bottoms of his shoes, so it must have been a great time!

PORTLAND VACATION

James' company sent him to Portland for a conference and we all decided to go along. We spent Saturday and Sunday touring around Oregon. Saturday we went to the Portland Saturday market. It was more like the portland hippie fest, not at all what we expected. Sunday we drove out to the coast and spent the afternoon at the beach. My parents and my nephew Caleb met us on Sunday afternoon and spent the rest of the week with us. James was in conference stuff all day every day. I think he had a good time, but wished he could have seen a little more of Portland. My parents and I and the kids went to the Zoo, the Children's museum, the Japanese gardens, the Chinese gardens, the Oregon Trail Interpretive Center. Seth's favorite part of the trip was riding on the light rail Electric Train through the city and the Zoo train. He would say "ALL ABOARD" over and over every time the train stopped which was about every 2 minutes. I'm not sure the other passengers on the train appreciated it, but he had a great time. We also celebrated Seth's actual birthday on the last day of the trip with a slice of cake from the hotel restaurant and presents from mom and dad and grandma and grandpa. We spent that afternoon with James at the Oregon Science Museum before getting stuck in a major traffic jam on the way to the airport. With the 2 babies and Seth all in diapers, we called this the trip of the 4 P's, Peeing, Pooping and Puking in Portland. Let's just say that we used a lot of diapers, changed a lot of outfits and soaked a lot of burp cloths.

SETH'S BIRTHDAY

Seth's third birthday party was a Bob the Builder theme party. I made him a cake shaped like Bob's steamroller, Roley. Seth was so excited to see the cake come together and couldn't wait until we could put the Bob candle holder on it. It was fun to celebrate his birthday with all our friends and family. I can't believe he's three years old!

WILD WEATHER

We had two separate days of crazy weather here in the last month. The first day we had over and inch of rain fall in less than a half hour. That is practically unheard of in Utah. Our road was nearly covered in water and the rain was literally coming down in sheets. I have never seen anything like it in all my 30 years here in Utah. The second day of weird weather started out mild, but as the storm rolled in we had wave after wave of downpours and marble sized hail. The hail ripped our flowers and gardens to shreds and tore leaves out of the trees. Our yard looked so sad after it was all over, but thankfully it has slowly recovered.

MINI GOLFING

For FHE last week we took Seth Mini Golfing for the first time. He had a great time using his golf club like a shuffle board stick. He'd get the ball sort of close to the hole with his stick and then pick the ball up and either put it next to the hole and then hit it in with his club or just put it right into the hole. He also had fun running over the little bridges and into the tunnels that made up the course. It was a great FHE night.

SETH'S UPDATE

Seth's big accomplishment for this month is that he started potty training. He is still trying to get the hang of it. He's having a hard time telling us when he needs to go, but he had two dry days in a row this week and when he has a third dry day he will get some new Thomas trains to play with. I think he gets a little tired of mom and dad asking him if he needs to go and then doesn't want to go at all. He has also inherited his dad's love of computer and is quickly becoming a whiz with a computer mouse.

JACOB'S UPDATE

Jacob has become a mover! He has learned how to army crawl or breast stroke his way around the house. He doesn't use his knees yet to crawl, but he is fast at "swimming" from room to room. He is good at babbling "ma,ma,ma" and "da, da, da" and he can sit by himself now. His two bottom teeth popped up within three days of each other. It was kind of funny, because Jacob had a runny nose one day and I mentioned it to James and James said, "Maybe he's teething." Later that day I stuck my finger in Jake's mouth to see if his gums were swollen and instead of swollen gums I found a little tooth! It was quite a surprise.

FUNNY STORY

A few nights ago James did something really funny. We were laying in bed, he was asleep and I was almost asleep. Suddenly he says in a loud voice, "And this is how you fall asleep!" and then he lets out this big fake snore. I looked over at him wondering if he was being silly or something, but he was just sleeping peacefully. I told him about it the next day and he had no recollection of it. Now it's a running joke. Whenever he's getting ready to fall asleep he has to say "And this is how you fall asleep" and then snores loudly. It always makes me laugh.

Love James, Miekka, Seth and Jacob

07-16-06

Oh boy! I shouldn't have let two whole months pass since writing last. So much has happened. I'll try and keep this as short as I can and just mention some of the highlights.

Over Memorial Day weekend we took Seth for a "Day Out with Thomas". The Heber Valley railroad has a life sized Thomas engine come out each year and the kids get to take a train ride with Thomas. Seth was sooooo excited. There were a bunch of booths that were all Thomas related. Seth got to ride in "Clarabell" (one of Thomas' coaches) and had his picture taken with Thomas. We even ate dinner at a train restaurant.

I finally gave Jacob a haircut. James didn't want me to do it, but Jacob's bangs were so long that they were almost touching his nose. I took a bunch of before and after pictures. He looked very military after the cut. I thought that all he needed were some Army fatigues and he'd be set to follow in Grandpa Lane's footsteps.

At the end of June we went up to Logan for the Baerwaldt family reunion. It was fun to spend a few days with family that we don't see very often. We had an especially good time with Darren and his family. They came down to our house and we went swimming together before heading back up to Logan.

My brother Spencer and his wife Tammy came to visit the first week in July. My parent's had an open house to introduce Tammy to all of their friends. We spent a few days with Tammy, her mom, her sister and her sister's son. We went to the Thanksgiving Point Dinosaur museum and to the zoo. It was fun to have my whole family together.

We celebrated our 5th anniversary on the 13th of June. Seth spent the night at Marrisse's house, Jenni watched Jacob, and James and I went out to dinner at the Melting Pot. It's a fondue restaurant. The food was fantastic, but the price was pretty steep. We've decided that if we go there again that we will get just the cheese course and the dessert course. We also got ourselves a flat screen TV for our anniversary present.

Seth has been growing up so fast lately. He is getting very precocious. His new favorite thing is to ask "why" after everything I say. He is learning his ABC's and can sing the ABC song all by himself. He is getting really excited about his birthday. I have convinced him that he wants a Bob the Builder birthday instead of a Thomas one so I don't have to go out and buy all new stuff for the party. Seth has also learned to jump with both feet off the ground. He loves playing with his cousins and pretending to be different characters from the movies that he watches.

Jacob weighed nearly 16 pounds at his 4 month doctors appointment so he is gaining about 2 pounds a month and should weigh nearly 20 pounds now. I have the sore arms to prove that he is definitely a big boy. He has learned to turn himself over and has been getting himself up on his hands and knees quite a bit. I think he's not going to be a slouch about crawling and walking like Seth was. He can get his binky into his mouth by himself and is working on being able to sit up. I also started feeding him solid foods a few weeks ago. So far he likes everything I've given him except for green beans.

Well, that's about as short as I can make this update. We love you all.

Love James, Miekka, Seth and Jacob

5-7-06

This has been a fun month. We have spent a lot of time with family and just enjoying the nice spring weather.

Easter was a fun weekend. We spent Saturday at my sister's house and had an Egg Eggstravaganza. We dyed easter eggs, had an easter egg hunt, ate egg salad sandwiches, and had chocolate ganache eggs for dessert. My dad and I hid the eggs in the backyard for the egg hunt. We hid some really easy to find for the younger kids and harder for the older ones. Seth had a blast once he figured out what was going on. He was quite the intrepid egg hunter. He even picked up a few of the "hard" to find eggs. I found a train shaped easter basket for him at the DI and he carried that thing around all day long. He also had a fake flower that we had made at the Treehouse museum earlier in the week secured in his hair. It was so funny to see him carrying around a train easter basket with a huge paper flower in his hair. There are pictures of it so you can all get a good laugh too. Easter Sunday we had a nice dinner at my parent's house. James made the Easter ham and it was so good that he has been dubbed the Ham King and must make all the Easter hams from here on out. It was a really tasty ham.

I bought matching outfits for the boys to wear on Easter Sunday. I looked at lots of stores, but it's hard to find toddler sizes and infant sizes that match. I lucked out finally and found outfits in the right sizes that were on sale and they had a cute train engine on the front of them. I couldn't have gotten a more perfect deal. Seth saw the train and wanted to put the outfit on right there in the store. The boys were so cute in church that Sunday and Seth was showing off his engine shirt to any one who would pay attention to him.

James and I both celebrated our 30th birthdays this month. I think I feel a little bit older just because 30 is one of those taboo birthdays. I'm not in my twenties any more. We celebrated with my family on Easter Sunday since my birthday was the next day and then celebrated again on James' birthday. James gave me a treadmill so that I can get some exercise while I'm watching the news after the kids go to bed. I gave James a oven probe thermometer and some stands for the new laptop he has. We both had nice birthdays.

James' mom, Debbie, came to visit us and to see baby Jacob. I think James was despairing that she might not make it out here since her schedule is dominated by so many things that she can't control. We are so glad that she was able to come and spend time with us and the boys. We went to the zoo with her and Jenni and Justin on James' birthday. All Seth wanted to do the whole time we were there was ride on the little train they have there. It was torture to have to look at all those animals first.... That night we headed over to my parent's house for Caleb's blessing. Marrisse and Aaron decided to have the blessing on a Friday night so that all of his family who were in town for BYU graduation could be there. There were a lot of people there and it was fun to see everyone. Saturday we cleaned the yard in anticipation of Jacob's blessing and then we went out to dinner with Grandma and Grandpa Baerwaldt.

Sunday we blessed Jacob. We had lots of family and friends around us and it was a great occasion. James gave Jacob a beautiful blessing. He was blessed to have strong friends and family, to be an instrument in the Lord's hands, to serve a mission and to be married in the temple. I pray that Jacob will live worthy and want to have these blessings come to pass in his life. After sacrament meeting we had everyone over for a continental breakfast. Of course since we planned to have the breakfast outside it started to rain just as we all got home, so we moved everything back inside. It was still nice, but it would have been quite crowded if everyone we had invited showed up.

Tuesday was Debbie's last day with us and also her birthday. We all went out to dinner at the Bombay House restaurant. After gorging ourselves on the good food we came back to our house and had a rice crispy square birthday cake. Then we said family prayer and then said our goodbyes. I am glad that Debbie was able to come and see us. It was good for Seth to get to know his other Grandma a little more and for her to spend time with her grand babies.

James received a promotion at his job this last week. He is now a Senior Programmer. He will be in charge of the programming for a new acquisition his company recently made. We are excited about the promotion since it will give James a more prestigious standing in the company and also came with a nice raise. The raise will greatly help us in paying down our few debts and making more improvements on the house and yard.

Seth was finally exposed to Thomas the Tank Engine. It came on PBS while we were watching one afternoon and then Grandma Debbie brought him two books that feature Thomas. He is now addicted. He's told me several times that he is going to have a Thomas birthday party. Unfortunately for him, I already bought Bob the Builder stuff for his birthday. I guess we'll see how insistent he becomes... Seth's favorite new phrase is "What are you talking about?" and he likes to call James and me by our first names instead of mom and dad.

Jacob is growing as fast as he can. He loves to be upright and stiff and is sometimes hard to hold because he is always leaning away from whoever is holding him. He is laughing more and more and really likes to babble "stories" to us when he is happy. He is also getting close to rolling himself over. He is starting to grab things and wants to play with toys. Seth likes to help him get his toys and has even let him play with Lion a few times. I can't believe he is almost four months old. Time flies when you have a cute baby I guess.

I think that's it for this installment. We love you all.

Love James, Miekka, Seth and Jacob
