6 years and a sewing adventure
Seth turned 6 years old today. We told him the story of his birth this morning and it's amazing to me that it all happened 6 years ago. We went to the hospital that morning hoping to avoid a c-section by having the doctor try and turn Seth externally from a breech position to a head down position, but ended up having an emergency c-section that day because Seth did not like all the pushing and pulling that was going on. It was crazy. I was so hepped up on the muscle relaxant they had given me that I didn't even know what was going on until we were halfway to the operating room. Six years later I have a wonderful boy, who is kind to his siblings (most of the time) and his parents, loves to use his imagination, and is generally happy and content. When he blew out his birthday candle tonight he said "My dearest birthday wish is that I get to spend my birthday with my family." That really says it all, doesn't it? What a sweetheart!
Now for my sewing adventure...
I made a dress for my niece, Maggie. I think it was the first serious bit of sewing I have ever done. I've made tons of costumes, but who cares if you mess up on something that will only be worn once a year or as a dress up by 3 year olds. I've also made some dolls clothes, same thing applies though, it's for a doll, so if you have to fudge something who is going to notice? This dress is for Maggie to wear on Sundays to church, she bought some shoes that were a bright, lipstick-red color and couldn't find a dress to go with them, so I offered to sew something for her. I felt a little intimidated by the prospect of having to make something that looks really, really nice. I think I pulled it off though. The sleeves were a little tricky because the free-arm on my machine was too wide to put them over and sew them in the round like the pattern instructed. I ended up picking them out and sewing them like I had sewn other sleeves, along the shoulders first and then down the armpits and the sides of the bodice. I don't think they look quite as nice as they would have if I had been able to sew them the correct way, but they are on and she'll be able to get her arms into them. Here's a picture of the finished product. I hope it fits her!
I also made a matching scripture bag from a tutorial my cousin, Jessica, posted on her blog. Here's the link if you'd like to try it: Tote Bag Tutorial . Her tutorial is for a larger bag, so I had to mess around with the measurements to get something that was the right dimensions for the books Maggie wants to carry in it. It's reversible and so cute. I appliqued an M for Maggie on one side and some cherries on the other. I used my sister-in-law's Cricut machine to cut out the M, it worked really well, but I realized that all the letters would be backwards if I tried to spell anything else out of fabric on it (the M was fine because it looks the same forward and backward). Cricut needs a function to reverse letters! Of course if they did that I would be sorely tempted to buy one. Actually I'm sorely tempted already, it's a neat little machine, but I have this feeling I might not use it that much. I guess I'll just have to keep borrowing it from Courtenay instead. Happy birthday to Seth! I can't believe he's 6 either (though I haven't seen him since he was 3, so that makes sense).

Awesome job on the dress, that's how I do sleeves too, it's just much easier. Less pulling of the hair. LOVE the scripture tote! I'm glad someone used it! It looks adorable. :)
